When you come in on Monday, and you’re not feeling real well, does anyone ever say to you, “Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays”?
I threw this together for a comment response on my blog, so figured I’d share it:
Jan. 21, 2007: WaPo notes that Craig is “another regular on the retirement rumor mill, but Democrats aren’t paying much attention, because Idaho is Republican country.”
Mar. 8, 2007: 43rd State Blues highlights a rumored meeting of GOP bigwigs in Idaho to discuss options regarding the Senate race.
Mike Adams, local Idaho Falls GOP gadfly & sometime mouthpiece for Frank Vandersloot, GOP homophobe & multi-level millionaire, has an interesting op-ed in this Sunday’s Post Register.
Adams, a former radio-station owner who advised Mr.V in his purchase last year of 6 stations, bluntly asserts that Larry Craig will not be running in ’08…
Shoring up the retirement rumors is something I heard this week from a very well-connected Idaho politico, who heard it from an even more connected pol–one with inroads to the GOP. His sources say Craig is retiring and now it’s just a matter of when…
So, the rumors – at least four unique sources (not four people echoing and repeating the same single rumor) – are coming from the Washington Post, two liberal bloggers, and one conservative figure.
Over the weekend, for Monday or Tuesday, I’ll be compiling an updated Retirement Watch post that I’ll cross-post here with new developments on Craig (above), Domenici, Warner, Cochran, Hagel, and others.
As noted here: Bogden in Nevada and Charlton in Arizona were also in the midst of investigations targeting current or former Republican members of Congress when they were fired.
I believe Charlton was investigating Rick Renzi/ of AZ-1. Is it possible that Bogden was investigating Jon Porter of NV-3?
Both of these were new seats created in 2002 to be somewhat competitive. Renzi won last time with 51%; Porter barely got re-elected by about 4,000 votes. Both are good targets; hopefully the ethics angle will be usable against them.
Duncan Hunter isn’t running for re-election. It’s a really conservative district in the east suburbs of San Diego; Bush got 57% in 2000 and 61% in 2004. Hunter’s son (also Duncan) will run to replace him. Maybe there’ll be a nasty GOP primary to weaken the eventual nominee.
